Boo at the Zoo

Bring your little ghosts and goblins to Boo at the Zoo! This annual Audubon Zoo extravaganza is a fun-filled Halloween event for children up to age 12, featuring trick-or-treat houses with candy, Ghost Train, a haunted house (scary and non-scary), games with prizes, entertainment and more. All games and treats, except concessions, are free with admission.

Adults and children alike dress in elaborate costumes.... and like most family entertainment in the Big Easy, alcohol is served for the adults and the food is quite excellent. I always get my favorite, shrimp and grits.

A limited number of tickets are sold for each night, giving visitors the opportunity to experience Boo at the Zoo in a more relaxed atmosphere. They do sell out, so get your tickets early.

The Retreat Salon in New Orleans has offered to arrange for hair dressers to come to the Hilton for appointments. One of their stylists did the hair and makeup for our fashion show a few years back. They have done fantastic victorian period and alternative/goth updo's for us in the past....

You can call them at 504-866-7724 to make arrangements.

St Charles Avenue

Trick or Treating

On  the corner of St Charles Avenue and State Street is a home that covers itself with skeletons every year for Halloween. Not to be outdone, many of the neighbors started their own elaborate Halloween displays. The decorations are amazing and the neighborhood up State Street towards Clayborne is a great place to Trick or Treat among the old Mansions.

This neighborhood is a 30 minute or more drive (with traffic) from the downtown, but it is so worth it!

Its a completely insane neighborhood party with an open bar for the adults and decorations and candy galore for the kids. I have never seen this many people in my life trick or treating, it looked like Disneyland.

New Orleans and Baton Rouge has World Class Haunted Houses!

For Years they have made the Top Ten Haunted Attractions Lists by Travel Chanel and Haunted House Magazine.

They'll be crowded the weekend before Halloween... but they are worth the wait!

The Mortuary is located at

4800 Canal Street

(a short cab ride from the French Quarter)

It is actually in a 100 year old funeral home building right next to a Cemetery.

Its sets, props and makeup are amazing.

The VIP ticket will let you skip the line (its a real time saver)

The House of Shock is located at

319 Butterworth Street, under the Huey P. Long Bridge

(a 20 minute cab ride from the French Quarter)

It is not just a Haunted House...

It has a small Carnival Outside and a live stage show complete with pyrotechnics.

The VIP ticket here puts you on the front row for the stage show, but doesn't really save much time in getting into the Haunted house. Be prepared to wait... but its worth it.

The 13th Gate is located at

832 Saint Philip Street, downtown Baton Rouge

(about an hour and a half from New Orleans)

I'm listing it here because it is well worth the drive. Made up of two different haunted attractions, it is an amazing experience! The sets are second to none.

Nightmare Hollow is located at

63 Hattie Winston Rd, Lumberton, Ms 39455

(about an hour and a half from New Orleans)

This outdoor venue features over 4 acres of winding trails filled with nightmares of the kind you only whisper about in the dark of night. Located on property that is actually haunted, our creators have delved into the darkest recesses of human nature and recreated some of the most horrific crimes, demonic possessions, forgotten folktales, gruesome murders and the like to delight and terrify you.  If you survive, that is....

TripAdvisor has a comprehensive list of all the tours available in the city....

Be careful with the "free tour" companys. They are oftentimes not licensed and will try to sell you a book or ask for a big tip at the end of the tour. Also, some of the cemeteries now require licensed tour guides to accompany people into the cemeteries to prevent vandalism.
